About

Yale School of Management

Although its parent university opened its doors back in 1701, making it one of the oldest universities in the United States, the Yale School of Management (Yale SOM) wasn’t officially founded until 1976. It may be a relative latecomer to the world of business education, but a university this prestigious was never going to take long to establish a leading business school. Nowadays Yale SOM is ranked amongst the top 20 in the world by the likes of QS and Forbes, carving out a reputation along the way as somewhere which does things a little differently to the other major business schools.

Yale SOM places a strong focus on the nonprofit sector and it is thought around 10% of its graduates go on to work in the industry. It also has stronger links with its parent institution than most other business schools, with students actively encouraged to take classes and work with individuals from other parts of the university. This is a particularly important consideration in the context of a management school, since having the ability to work with people from all different backgrounds and disciplines is essential for any good leader.

The master’s programs available at Yale SOM are highly-specialized, covering several distinct areas of management. The Master’s Degree in Systemic Risk is aimed at early to mid-career employees of banks and other regulatory agencies with the responsibility of managing risk within their organisation. Those who wish to launch a career in investment will be well-suited to the Master’s Degree in Asset Management, which offers students the chance to learn from practising investors at top investment funds. There is also the flexible Master’s Degree in Public Education as well as two programs open to master in management students at schools in the Global Network for Advanced Management: Global Business & Society and Advanced Management.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the mission of Yale SOM?

The mission of the Yale SOM is to educate leaders for business and society. And Yale SOM is a place where the mission matters, where students, alumni, faculty, and staff embrace its meaning and implications. It provides both long-term strategic guidance about what the school is and should be and informs decisions and actions on a daily basis.

What are the distinctive qualities of Yale SOM?

Educating Leaders: The pressing challenge for all leaders today is to grapple with the fast-growing complexity of the modern world—whether that means understanding the changes wrought by technological advancement, by the increasing contact between cultures, legal systems, and political environments, or by the shifting role of governments in business. Yale SOM is a source for leadership thinking and action that contends with this complexity across sectors and regions.

Distinctively Global:  The purely local enterprise no longer exists. Business leaders have to understand supply chains, data networks, trade policies, cultural differences, and political dynamics. Yale is leading the way in cultivating a broader understanding of global connections, in part through founding the Global Network for Advanced Management.

Engagement with Yale University:  A comprehensive understanding of business challenges requires a broad view of the forces and trends working on an organization. Through engagement with the intellectual life of Yale University, SOM students and faculty cultivate expertise across subjects, learn about state-of-the-art thinking in their fields, pick up insights, and broaden their horizons.

What is Edward P. Evans Hall?

Edward P. Evans Hall is the home for the Yale School of Management, completed in 2014.  The building houses state-of-the-art classrooms, faculty offices, academic centers, and student and meeting spaces organized around an enclosed courtyard, all intended to create a teaching and learning environment that will support the school’s innovative integrated MBA curriculum and enhance the Yale SOM community.
