Kühne Logistics University

Located in Hamburg, GermanyKühne Logistics University (KLU) offers a range of programs, including multiple master’s degrees and a doctoral program. The university focuses on developing students’ analytical and problem-solving skills, equipping them with the knowledge and expertise necessary to excel in the dynamic and complex world of logistics.

KLU’s strong industry connections and collaborations ensure real-world experiences, internships, and career placement opportunities.

The evolution of KLU is far from ordinary. Initially founded as the Hamburg School of Logistics (HSL) in 2003, the school experienced rapid growth. Four years later, the school was renamed the Kühne School of Logistics and Management after the businessman Klaus-Michael Kühne.

But who is the man behind the KLU’s name? Let us delve into the life and accomplishments of Klaus-Michael Kühne.

Who is Klaus-Michael Kühne?

Born in 1937, Klaus-Michael Kühne (or Kuehne) is a German entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the majority shareholder of Kühne + Nagel, one of the world’s leading logistics companies. Kühne + Nagel specializes in global logistics services, including freight forwarding, transportation, and supply chain solutions.

Kühne stands as the wealthiest German individual with a staggering net worth of nearly $40 billion. However, his status as a tax exile has drawn criticism. Kühne has resided in Switzerland for the past 50 years, benefiting from its tax-friendly environment.

Kühne champions education and research initiatives, particularly in the realms of logistics and maritime studies, through his Kühne Foundation. His commitment to elevating logistics education is evident in the establishment of KLU by the Kühne Foundation.

The German billionaire doesn’t seek media attention and rarely makes public appearances. This discretion showcases Kühne’s reserved nature and preference to let his successes speak for themselves.

Kühne’s Legacy in Hamburg

Kühne has put active attention toward his legacy. As a native of the largest port in the country and a traditional global gateway, Hamburg holds significance for him. By investing in a luxury hotel, a football team, and KLU, he aims to leave his distinct mark on this city of 1.8 million inhabitants.

A  lifelong fan of local soccer club Hamburger Sport-Verein (HSV), Kühne has injected millions of euros into HSV player acquisitions and general operations. His financial support has been critical for HSV to maintain competitiveness and financial stability. His relationship with the club’s management and fanbase has had its ups and downs, and he’s expressed a desire for more influence over club decisions

Kühne, expressing his passion for HSV, stated:

Football is a very emotional matter. If you have a favorite club, then you can never let go of it in your lifetime. It is an attempt to create order and stability within the club – with a very slim chance of success. However, due to the high returns from my investments in Kuehne + Nagel and Hapag-Lloyd, the liquidity in my holding is so large that I could provide such amounts to HSV. In Hamburg, everyone loves HSV, but no one wants to get involved financially. That always leaves me as the only one.

Besides his business and sports endeavors, Kühne’s unwavering commitment to education is evident through his generous contributions to KLU. Initially, he donated 3 million euros to the university’s foundation, followed by an impressive additional 30 million euros in 2007.

Demonstrating his dedication and belief in the institution’s mission, he continued to support KLU with an additional contribution of 40 million euros. Kühne’s philanthropic endeavors have undeniably contributed to KLU’s growth and success.
