Building a global perspective: From Hong Kong to Switzerland

Adam, a Hong Kong native, first began expanding his global perspective when he embarked on his A-Level education in the UK. It was during this time that he was introduced to different cultural experiences and perspectives.

Seeking to further broaden his horizons, Adam pursued a degree in Information Technology Management at the University of Manchester. There, he was able to immerse himself in a diverse student community, gaining exposure to new ideas and ways of thinking.

Although the transition from Hong Kong to the vastly different UK culture was challenging, Adam wholeheartedly embraced the experience. “I think that’s what gave me the hunger and the spark to continue that international exposure and to find that diversity in my life.” (00:35)

After successfully settling into his new international environment, Adam pursued a Master’s degree in Strategy and International Management at the University of St.Gallen in Switzerland. This decision provided numerous opportunities to exchange ideas and learn from individuals with unique perspectives. As Adam puts it, “It’s shaping you, not only as someone in the business world as a professional, but also as an individual.” (01:26)

Adam’s mini-bio is a clear example of how an individual can gain a global perspective, so let’s dive deeper into the definition of a global perspective.

What Is a Global Perspective?

Despite being a widely used term, ‘global perspective’ remains challenging to define. Does global perspective refer to comprehending global affairs? Or does it imply a distinct understanding of different views from others? (01:46)

According to Adam, a global perspective encompasses more than having knowledge of the world. He thinks interacting with the 32 nationalities during the course will enable him to comprehend global dynamics better. That’s because each individual has unique stories, experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. They can complement each other, contributing their backgrounds and areas of expertise. (01:58

The notion of a global perspective is shifting from a knowledge-based concept to a mindset-based one. Pursuing a master’s degree with an international focus can provide an ideal training ground for developing this mindset. In addition, living in a melting pot of various nationalities can help individuals gradually adapt to a global environment.

Co-Creation: Global Perspectives in Context

Building on our thesis that the global perspective is a mindset rather than knowledge to acquire, let’s examine some examples of how it is used.

Sharing experiences is crucial for developing one’s perspective, and co-creation is a key factor in achieving this goal. This principle has been a constant for Adam throughout his time in both the UK and Switzerland. When faced with an assignment, his first response is to ask: how do we co-create this experience?

Co-creation is a powerful tool for gaining a clear-eyed view from someone else’s perspective. Unlike simple collaboration, co-creation involves fully understanding the limits, goals, and methodologies of those around you. The result is a more comprehensive and insightful outcome.

Backed by this knowledge, students can begin leveraging their strengths and experiences to co-create something meaningful.

One of the keys to co-creation is to face projects with an open mind. By assuming certain resources, processes, or outcomes, you’re already closing yourself off to all of the other ways of working you haven’t yet experienced.

Fully embracing the concept of a global perspective requires receptivity to the notion that your approach is only sometimes the most effective one. As it overlaps with a growth mindset, a global perspective seeks constant improvement through marginal gains that, when combined, can make a significant impact.

Resetting your expectations applies to both your professional and personal life. By keeping an open mind, whether pursuing a master’s degree or attending a networking event, you hold doors open to new opportunities.

The Importance of a Global Perspective in Business

The trends in international student mobility reflect the importance of a global perspective for students as they navigate an increasingly interconnected and diverse world.

Moving on beyond graduation into the working world, new hires will encounter businesses expanding across diverse markets. Our interconnected world has created the need for employees with international exposure and innovative ideas. Consequently, employers increasingly recognize the value of such employees.

Companies that embrace the global perspectives of their teams are more likely to succeed in the international market. They better understand different cultures and can navigate varying business practices effectively. In addition, effective communication and collaboration with clients and partners from different cultures and societies are essential for building strong relationships and expanding into new markets.

A diverse team brings valuable innovation and creativity to businesses. The unique experiences and perspectives that individuals from different backgrounds contribute lead to more creative solutions and ideas.

The competitive nature of the current business landscape emphasizes the need for diversity to foster innovation and ensure growth. Incorporating diverse perspectives, experiences, and ideas helps businesses remain relevant in a rapidly changing market.

Each individual has unique stories, experiences, strengths, and weaknesses. We can complement each other, contributing our backgrounds and areas of expertise. (02:09)
