But that begs the question, how do you craft your career narrative?
As a strategic narrative expert, Vishal Thacker has guided businesses and master’s students to their most vital stories. Vishal has a background in branding, an MBA, and a passion for helping people & brands clarify their ideas and get them across. He has developed a comprehensive system for creating engaging and meaningful career narratives. Vishal has worked with schools, including ESADE, London Business School, IESE, and IMD, to provide student boot camps and workshops.
He gives us this tip: “A meaningful narrative is one that distills your career so far into a singular core meaning which can then hold it together. Then you can communicate that meaning to the people that you meet.” (01:51)
Just as a career narrative continuously evolves, Vishal constantly adapts and improves his approach. For example, he originally began with one-on-one sessions before realizing it wasn’t scalable. “So I roped in one of my dear friends, Davide Neri (a coach who helps with building mindful relationships within the business world), to help me build a workshop system to scale it.” (03:22)

Creating a meaningful career narrative requires a deep understanding of three key building blocks that, when combined, form a cohesive and compelling story. Vishal identifies these essential components as strengths and skills, values, and long-term vision.
The first building block involves identifying your core transferable skills and unique strengths. This step requires self-reflection and an honest assessment of your abilities. Then you can showcase your expertise and highlight your accomplishments in a way that sets you apart from others.
The second building block is to understand your values. By understanding your values, you’ll know the roles, and organizations where you are most likely to succeed and feel fulfilled.
The third building block involves clearly defining your long-term professional goals. This vision allows you to make strategic decisions about the steps you need to take to reach your desired destination, ensuring that your choices align with your ultimate objectives.
Addressing these three building blocks can create a solid foundation for your career narrative to communicate your story to admissions teams and headhunters.
That’s why they serve as the foundation of Vishal’s workshop modules. Vishal highlights that “these three modules work at the level of awareness and execution. But after that, we have a bunch of modules which are purely focused on execution.” (05:10)
Vishal puts a particular focus on interviewing techniques, with an original twist. Recruiters face six or seven tiring interviews per day, so Vishal asks, “How can we as interviewees make it easier for the interviewer to understand our experience so that we can actually get that across?” (08:17)
To that end, he added two components to the career narrative journey: The Assessment Center and Story Portfolio Strategy for Interviews.
The Assessment Center is an intense, immersive experience that mirrors the recruitment process in various sectors. These simulations give participants a taste of the challenges they may face during actual interviews. Practicing allows students to develop strategies to overcome potential obstacles to getting their story across.
The StoryPortfolio Strategy for Interviews teaches students how to present their vast array of experiences in a captivating way. The idea is to build stories that make it easier for the recruiter to understand the depth of relevant experience you bring to the role.
An often-overlooked aspect of developing a compelling career narrative is networking. Networking allows you to learn from the experiences of others, and gain valuable insights into various industries and roles that might suit you.
“There are people out there who have done with their careers what you are trying to do with your careers,” Vishal says. “And so they have information that you need, information that helps you take a clearer decision.” (09:25)
Additionally, networking can lead to unexpected opportunities shaping your career path and enriching your narrative. As you cultivate relationships and share your story with others, those in your network can also provide you with insights into yourself. Vishal learned this fairly early on.
“My first client asked me to teach networking to her students,” he says, “and when I told her that I don’t really have an approach, she just said, ‘I would like you to teach them what you did with me. Because you didn’t know me several months ago. Then we got introduced, and now I’m a paying client of yours.’” (09:59)
