A Legacy in Finance: Following in His Father’s Footsteps

As industries grapple with complex data challenges, a master’s degree that provides a foundation in complex mathematics is incredibly valuable. Financial, mathematical, and analytical acumen enables one to decipher patterns, predict outcomes, and optimize solutions. Various sectors highly value these STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills and those who master them.

With a father who was an accountant in the healthcare industry, Siddhartha Kumar Pal was introduced to the world of numbers and financial strategies early on. This familial connection to the finance world and healthcare industry, set him on a path from Zambia to the University of Tampa’s Sykes College of Business.

Siddhartha’s decision to attend the University of Tampa went beyond the program’s reputation. The stories of friends, the allure of the vibrant Tampa area, and the welcoming nature of the university community drew Siddhartha in.

“I was really interested in the program because a lot of my friends went there and really loved the programs, and I just love the area around downtown Tampa,” Siddhartha says. (00:25)

The professors, some of whom he recognized from the university’s video logs, played a pivotal role in his education. Their real-world experience, particularly in investment banking, provided insights that went beyond textbook knowledge. (00:33)

Overcoming Challenges and Obstacles

Even in an inspiring and inclusive atmosphere, getting a master’s degree takes a lot of work. Courses like derivatives and fixed markets tested Siddhartha’s limits, pushing him to the edge of his capabilities. But with challenge came growth. The hands-on projects, like portfolio management, allowed him to apply classroom theories to real-world scenarios.

“I love that course, even if it pushed me to the edge. You’d probably be pulling out your hair, but I definitely love that course,” Siddhartha recalls. (03:57)

His professor’s industry experience added a unique dimension, offering Siddhartha insights into the practical application of mathematical concepts in finance.

Siddhartha felt the need for more specialized mentorship in certain courses. However, the student community’s collaborative spirit often filled this gap, with peers stepping in to help each other out. (03:55)

Collaborative learning and networking during a master’s program are pivotal for both academic and personal development. While it may be harder to find time for graduate students to carve out moments for social interaction, the importance of doing so cannot be overstressed.

Balancing Work, Study, and Life in Tampa

Life as a graduate student was more than just academics and socializing.

Siddhartha’s days were filled with drives to downtown, work at the financial aid office, and the occasional treat from eateries like Chick-fil-A and Einstein Bagels. The campus’s vibrant environment, combined with its diverse food options, made the university experience memorable. (01:17

The University of Tampa is enlivened by an array of student clubs that infuse vibrancy into the academic sphere. Siddhartha often found himself managing a 30-minute commute to campus just to partake in club activities. Evaluating his priorities, he decided to channel his energies predominantly into his academic pursuits and his job. His dedication bore fruit when he proudly graduated on time in 2022.

Put His Finance Degree To Use in the Healthcare Sector

Upon earning his master’s degree Siddhartha quickly found work with the help of the university’s Career Services. He’s currently Accounting Coordinator at Surgishop, a medical equipment supply company. With Microsoft Excel as his trusty sidekick, Siddhartha adeptly handles budgetary concerns and harnesses the power of data analytics to make informed financial decisions. (05:43)

As the healthcare sector continues to evolve, there is a growing need for master’s graduates like Siddhartha, who possess both passion and proficiency in finance, to navigate and manage these essential financial aspects.

Siddhartha’s journey and successes paint a vivid picture of the multifaceted benefits of pursuing a master’s degree. Siddharta rose to the challenge and seized the opportunities his education opened up to him.

When selecting a university it’s not just about the curriculum or the prestige. Siddhartha emphasizes, it’s crucial to think about the community you’ll be joining, the experiences you’ll gain, and the mentors who will guide you. These factors can shape your academic journey and influence your future career path. (08:35
