Five Key Things To Do

1. Think About Your Future

Choosing the right master’s program starts with reflecting on your personal goals and long-term career aspirations. Wendy advises applicants to think about what aspects of a program are essential to their growth and success.

“Consider your non-negotiables when choosing your education,” she says. “Envision where you would like to be in the future, and let that decision guide you.” (00:16)

At Nyenrode, the MSc in Management program offers three specializations: Financial Management, Digital Business & Innovation, and Global Business. These specializations allow students to tailor their education to their goals while building the skills needed to excel in their chosen field.

2. Do Your Research

After reflecting on their future goals, applicants should thoroughly research their options. Wendy urges applicants to gather as much information as possible to make an informed decision about which program best fits their needs and goals.

“Attend open days, compare curricula, and use platforms that integrate information from different universities,” she encourages. (00:38)

Nyenrode hosts various events, including open days, where prospective students can meet current students and alumni. Open days are a valuable experience that can help applicants learn more about the program and explore the campus to get a feel for the Nyenrode experience. Before applying, be sure to read all the admission requirements and carefully follow the application process.

3. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

Applying for a master’s program can be intimidating. However, taking risks and getting out of your comfort zone can open up new opportunities and foster long-term success.

Wendy highlights, “Growth happens when you are uncomfortable. Be courageous, push your boundaries, and think about how stepping out of your comfort will benefit you in the long run.” (00:59)

Embracing the challenges of the application process will open up learning experiences that will pay off in the future.

4. Focus on Your Motivation

Motivation letters play a key role in master’s program applications. Nyenrode states its core values as leadership, entrepreneurship, and stewardship. Its mission is to create responsible future leaders by cultivating a learning environment that focuses on sustainability, ethics, empathy, reflection, and critical thinking. Wendy encourages applicants to reflect on how their personal values align with those of the university when applying.

“We often value motivation more than grades,” she says. “Write a genuine motivation letter that resonates with Nyenrode’s values. Do your research. Remember to be yourself and let your passion shine through.” (01:23)

By staying true to your values and being authentic, you’ll not only stand out as an applicant but also show your commitment to Nyenrode’s mission.

5. Have a Financial Plan

When applying for a master’s program, it’s essential to understand the total cost of the program. It is also important to reflect on how you will finance your master’s degree, including tuition fees, admission fees, housing, and living costs.

Wendy emphasizes the importance of making a financial plan ahead of time. She notes there are various options, “Whether it’s personal savings, a loan, or family support, plan ahead. Don’t forget to apply to scholarships early, that can make a big difference.” (01:49)

For applicants seeking additional funding, Nyenrode offers several student scholarships. Fill out the application as requested and keep important deadlines in mind to ensure you apply on time.

Five Things To Avoid

1. Don’t Base Your Decision on Someone Else

When deciding on your academic and career path, it’s important to stay true to your own goals and aspirations. Naomi reminds applicants that trusting themselves and following their personal vision will lead to greater fulfillment, career satisfaction, and success in the long run.

“Choose your path based on what you want, not what others expect,” Naomi says. “Remember, it’s your future at stake, not theirs.” (00:28)

While advice from family and mentors is important, the decision of where to study should ultimately reflect your passions and goals.

2. Don’t Get Intimidated by the Admission Process

The application process might seem overwhelming at first, but Nyenrode provides a clear overview of the full application process for the program on its website. Applicants can easily request a brochure with further information, and can easily apply to the program online.

“It might seem daunting, but if you really value your future, it’s worth it,” Naomi urges. “And trust us, it’s not as hard as it seems.” (00:51)

A frequently asked questions (FAQ) section is also available on the program website to address common concerns. If you have any further questions, you can always reach out to a program advisor for further assistance.

3. Don’t Leave Things Until the Last Minute

Leaving application tasks until the last minute can cause stress and confusion. Naomi highlights that careful planning and timely submission are essential for a smooth application process.

“Plan ahead and stay organized with your application,” she says. “The sooner you know whether you’ve been accepted or not, the less stress you’ll have later on.” (01:13)

This program has a limited number of spaces available, so it is crucial to submit your application on time. A timely application also increases your chances of securing your preferred location and housing.

4. Don’t Do This Alone

Choosing a program is a big decision, and while it is a decision that applicants must make for themselves, it isn’t something that they have to go through alone. Naomi encourages applicants to seek input from those closest to them, gaining fresh perspectives and further insights to make an informed decision. She also encourages applicants to make use of available resources such as seeking advice from program advisors or career coaches.

“While the decision is ultimately yours, seek advice from your parents, friends, and program advisors,” she says. “Ask questions during open days and get as much clarity as possible.” (01:37)

By gathering information and asking relevant questions, applicants will be able to feel more confident in their final decision.

5. Don’t Try To Be Someone You’re Not

Naomi also highlights that it is important for applicants to be themselves throughout their application process. This comes across as more genuine. Allowing personal passion to shine through can make an application stand out. Naomi encourages applicants to showcase what makes them unique, rather than trying to conform to a specific expectation.

“We want to hear your authentic voice. There’s no mold you need to fit into. Just be yourself.” (02:03)

Nyenrode values candidates who stay true to themselves and who feel confident in their passion and goals, as it reflects the spirit of the university and its commitment to fostering personal growth and leadership.
