UCT GSB’s MPhil in Inclusive Innovation Drives Change

Are you looking for a master’s program that blends academics with social purpose? Or do you want to learn to tackle global systemic challenges in real, tangible ways? Then the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Inclusive Innovation at the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB) may be a good fit for you.

When modern business structures demand urgent solutions to complex challenges, management education must evolve to prepare leaders accordingly. Traditional business programs no longer suffice for leaders tackling climate change, social inequality, and resource scarcity on a global scale.

In response to this, UCT GSB’s unique MPhil program equips change-makers with tools to address pressing challenges in South Africa and globally. Not to mention, the program prioritizes personal and professional growth equally. Purpose and real-world relevance are key to this program.

What Is UCT GSB’s MPhil in Inclusive Innovation?

Let’s explore the key factors that distinguish this program from traditional graduate degrees.

Understanding the MPhil: Is It Equivalent to a Master’s?

You may be wondering what an MPhil degree is and whether it is the same as a master’s degree. The short answer is: an MPhil degree is a Master of Philosophy degree. Therefore, it is a specialized type of master’s degree

The program has a research focus and typically concludes with a research project and dissertation (worth 180 credits), supervised by a dedicated faculty member. Dissertations can also include a strong practical component, such as a business plan or a design prototype.

A Program Rooted in Social Purpose

There is a strong thread of social purpose woven into the program that goes beyond checking academic boxes. Inclusive innovation refers to the development of new products or processes (or a combination of these) that improve the lives of the most economically marginalized communities. Students tackle real-world social needs. They do so through research and hands-on projects, developing innovative solutions with faculty support.

Four compulsory modules make up the program curriculum in the first year. The program includes interactive lectures, class discussions, practical projects, and field visits. The program explores core topics such as inclusive and social innovation, design thinking, systems thinking, social entrepreneurship, and values-based leadership. In addition, there is ample opportunity throughout the program for self-reflection and personal growth.

Being Part of a Diverse Community, Both Inside and Outside of the Classroom

The program takes place in-person at the UCT GSB campus in Cape Town, South Africa. The campus features modern lecture halls, group study rooms, a library, campus restaurants, and on-site accommodation.

Outside of the campus itself, there is a vibrant local setting. South Africa is one of the world’s most diverse countries. With 11 official languages and a multicultural society, students gain valuable cross-cultural perspectives.

Furthermore, the country combines quality education with lower living and study costs than in Europe or North America. Not to mention nearby beaches, bustling city life, a rich cultural heritage, and beautiful nature. This makes it an enriching place to live and learn.

How Long Is a Master’s at UCT GSB?

The full-time program takes two years to complete. Many master’s programs last 1-2 years. The program divides the terms into 4 modules. Typically, Module 1 begins in February and Module 4 ends in November.

This ensures that students can complete their master’s program in a shorter timeframe and leverage their new skills and knowledge directly in their career.
