The Allure of a Global Business Education
Embarking on a journey of global education can open doors to unparalleled opportunities. For students considering a double degree business program, the experiences of individuals who have navigated this path offer invaluable insights.
Javier Martinez is a graduate of the Master of International Business (MIB Double Degree Program) from the Darla Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina. He shares why the double degree business program journey was so important to him.
The full-time program offered far more than theoretical knowledge. It allowed him to explore new countries and cultures, expand his worldview, and learn from an international group of peers. The program also helped him secure a highly-coveted internship position with JPMorgan Chase & Co in London, in the United Kingdom.
He is currently completing an MSc in International Management program at Esade in Barcelona, Spain. Having completed part of his MIB program in Barcelona, he was able to network and plant seeds for the next step in his educational journey.
Darla Moore and Esade: A Powerful Partnership

Students can grow their cultural awareness, explore new study destinations, and widen their horizons. They build a global network and make valuable connections that set them up for success in a globalized world.
Originally from the United States, with Cuban and Puerto Rican roots, Javier decided to attend Esade in Spain as part of the program. He saw it as an opportunity to connect with his Spanish roots and learn more about Spanish culture. Subsequently, he particularly enjoyed the beautiful and vibrant city of Barcelona.
He reflects, “I chose to come to Esade because Barcelona is an incredibly vibrant city and I have Spanish roots… it presented me [with] an opportunity to connect with my culture and to enjoy the beautiful environment.” (00:05)
Javier further explains, “I can really see why the University of South Carolina would partner up with a school like Esade…. I think it’s a match made in heaven.” (00:34)
He highlights that Esade places a strong focus on sustainability, entrepreneurship, and building leaders with a strong sense of character.
Combining the strengths of both programs ensures that students receive a well-rounded and globally relevant study abroad experience.
Barcelona: A Vibrant Hub for International Study
Beyond the academic excellence of the program, the allure of studying in Spain played a significant role in Javier’s decision.
He remarks, “Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever been to. The architecture is amazing, the culture is beautiful, and the food.” (01:51)
He further explains, “We work very hard at Esade, but there’s also a great balance that the city of Barcelona helps to provide.” (02:01)
Socializing with classmates, enjoying a “café con leche”, and taking strolls on the beach are integral parts of the experience. This balance contributes to a positive and enriching study abroad program.
The city is a melting pot of creative energy, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Barcelona has become a start-up hub. It has a particularly strong presence in E-Commerce, Fintech, and Logistics.
Additionally, Spain is an ideal location for Spanish or English-speaking students who want to study or pursue a career in Europe.
